Super Bowl History
First played on Janaury 15, 1967, the Super Bowl was part of a merger agreement made with the National FootbalL League (NFL) and American Football League AFL. They decided the championship teams from both leagues would World Championship game until the leagues could merge completely. The name "Super Bowl" was coined by the owner of the Kansas Cit Cheifs, Lamar Hunt. Roman numerals are used to identify each game, rather than the year in which the Super Bowl is held.
The Dallas Cowboys have appeared in the greatest number of Super Bowls with eight. The Pittsburgh Steelers have won more Super Bowls than any other team with six. Five NFL teams have never won Super Bowls, they include: Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans. The Browns and Lions won NFL championships in the pre-Super Bowl era; the Saints, Jaguars, and Texans have all joined the league after the kickoff of the Super Bowl era.
